LiFePO4 vs Lead-Acid for Sri Lankan Homes
Share
When you store solar energy or back up your home, the battery chemistry decides how much you really get, how long it lasts, and how safe it is. In Sri Lanka the practical choice comes down to lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) versus traditional lead-acid. Here is the honest comparison.
Usable capacity
A battery's rated size and its usable size are different. Lead-acid should only be discharged about halfway to protect its life, so a 10 kWh lead-acid bank gives you roughly 5 kWh to actually use. LiFePO4 can be discharged deeply, so almost the full rating is usable. You buy far less nameplate capacity with LiFePO4 to get the same real energy.
Cycle life
Beating a time-of-use tariff means charging and discharging every single day. Lead-acid deep-cycle batteries typically last only a few hundred such cycles before capacity fades, often a couple of years of daily use. Quality LiFePO4 storage is rated for thousands of cycles, commonly 6,000 or more, which is many years of the same duty. Over the life of the system, the cheaper battery is usually the more expensive one.
Maintenance and safety
Lead-acid can need ventilation and, in some types, topping up, and it off-gasses. LiFePO4 is sealed, maintenance-free, and one of the most thermally stable lithium chemistries, with a battery management system and, on ESS towers, integrated fire protection. That makes it far better suited to a modern home, indoors or out.
Cost over time
Lead-acid wins on the first invoice and loses over the years, because you replace it sooner and use less of what you paid for. LiFePO4 costs more up front and less per usable kWh over its life. For daily solar-and-storage cycling, that is the decisive point.
The verdict
For a home that cycles a battery every day to beat the tariff and ride out power cuts, LiFePO4 is the sensible choice, and it is what we supply. It is also stackable, so you can start small and expand. Build your system to see the right size for your home, or read how much battery backup you need.
